mobs.json and
quests.json, extracted from the Classic World
client. The "traditional MapleStory baseline"
reference points are included only as a comparison for players
with prior MapleStory experience - they are not source-of-truth
for Classic World claims. When we cite a traditional MapleStory
number, assume ±20% variance across pre-CW sources and
treat the Classic World number as authoritative.
Mob EXP: mostly the same, with exceptions
The datamine surprises here. Most iconic traditional MapleStory mob EXP values carried over into CoT 2 unchanged. Selective shifts DO exist - the low-level Slime notably almost doubled - but the "everything has been retuned!" narrative you might have heard is largely false. Concrete numbers:
| Mob | Lv | CoT 2 EXP | Common traditional MapleStory wiki EXP | Delta |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snail | 1 | 3 | 3 | same |
| Blue Snail | 2 | 4 | 4 | same |
| Red Snail | 4 | 8 | 8 | same |
| Slime | 6 | 10 | 6 | +67% ⬆ |
| Pig | 7 | 15 | 15 | same |
| Orange Mushroom | 8 | 15 | 15 | same |
| Ribbon Pig | 10 | 20 | 20 | same |
| Green Mushroom | 15 | 26 | 27 | -4% ⬇ |
| Bubbling | 15 | 26 | ~26 | same |
| Blue Mushroom | 20 | 32 | 32 | same |
| Stirge | 20 | 33 | 33 | same |
| Jr. Necki | 21 | 38 | 38 | same |
| Horny Mushroom | 22 | 35 | 35 | same |
| Zombie Mushroom | 24 | 42 | 42 | same |
| Wild Boar | 25 | 42 | 42 | same |
| Fire Boar | 32 | 60 | 60 | same |
| Ligator | 32 | 60 | 60 | same |
| Curse Eye | 35 | 70 | 70 | same |
| Cold Eye | 40 | 85 | 85 | same |
| Zombie Lupin | 40 | 90 | 90 | same |
| Copper Drake | 45 | 105 | 105 | same |
| Master Chronos | 46 | 115 | 115 | same |
| Wraith | 48 | 120 | 120 | same |
| Drake | 50 | 135 | 135 | same |
| Coolie Zombie | 57 | 190 | 190 | same |
| Death Teddy | 85 | 1300 | 1300 | same |
The pattern: from Lv 15 onward, mob EXP appears identical to traditional MapleStory within margin-of-error. The only significant outlier we've spotted is Slime jumping from 6 to 10 EXP - a 67% increase that meaningfully speeds up the Lv 6-10 bracket. Green Mushroom drops 1 EXP but that's within wiki variance.
Practical takeaway: if you have traditional MapleStory grinding-spot habits, they're probably still valid EXP-per-hour. The mobs catalog shows the live CoT 2 datamine value for every mob - if you want to verify a specific number, search the mob and check its detail page.
Quest EXP: harder to compare
Quest EXP is much harder to A/B compare against traditional MapleStory because
community wikis rarely captured exact quest reward numbers - they
focused on mob EXP and left "quest rewards vary" as a wave-of-the-
hand. Datamine gives us concrete numbers. Examples pulled from
quests.json:
| Quest | Min Level | CoT 2 EXP reward | Region |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mai's Training | 3 | 70 | Maple Island |
The comparison table is intentionally small - we're avoiding citing traditional MapleStory quest EXP numbers we can't confidently source. The quests catalog lists every CoT 2 quest with its EXP + item rewards; if a value looks different from your memory, treat the datamine number as authoritative for CoT 2.
Party EXP formula: the big unknown
The traditional MapleStory canon party EXP formula is:
partyExp(member) = mobBaseExp * (0.6 / partySize + 0.4 * (memberLv / totalPartyLv))
Our Party EXP guide uses this formula as its working assumption because it's the most-cited traditional MapleStory formula and Nexon has not publicly announced retuning the party split. But we do not have datamine-level confirmation that CoT 2 preserves this exact formula. Reasons to be cautious:
- Party formulas typically live in server code, not client files. Datamining the client doesn't surface the party-split math the way it does mob EXP.
- Nexon has retuned party bonuses in other MapleStory builds. Modern KMS and BB-era GMS both use materially different party formulas from traditional MapleStory.
- New systems interact with party EXP. Citizenship contribution may bundle into party turnins; the new Physical Fitness Test event system likely has its own reward structure entirely.
What to do about it: assume the traditional MapleStory formula is directionally correct (partying benefits both members, 3-player parties benefit modestly more) but don't build a spreadsheet around exact percentages. We plan to do controlled tests and publish confirmed numbers on the Party EXP guide.
What Nexon typically retunes vs leaves alone
Historical pattern across MapleStory relaunches (KMS Reboot, BB, MSEA "Renegades"): Nexon rarely touches individual mob EXP but frequently touches:
- Level curve thresholds (EXP-to-level values at each level). This is the big multiplier - even without touching mob EXP, tuning the level curve makes the same mob feel faster or slower.
- Party bonus multipliers and buff bonuses (Holy Symbol, Rainbow Mark, etc.).
- Event EXP multipliers (2x events, weekend bonuses, first-week launch bonuses) - these are the biggest live-server variables and don't appear in datamine at all.
- Quest reward EXP at the individual quest level, especially for chain quests where a single retune changes leveling meta.
What Nexon rarely touches:
- Individual mob base EXP - consistent with what we see in the datamine (mostly unchanged).
- Class base kits at 1st job (Bowman is a notable exception this time - see Skill Changes).
- Base stat formulas (STR-to-damage, DEX-to-accuracy, etc.).
How to fact-check any EXP claim
Two workflows depending on what you're checking:
-
Specific mob EXP: search the mob on
the mobs catalog, open its detail page,
read
stats.exp. That's the CoT 2 datamine value - authoritative for CoT 2, ignore whatever the traditional MapleStory wiki says. - Specific quest EXP: search the quest on the quests catalog. Reward EXP is listed at the top of the detail page.
- Level curve / party formula: we don't yet have these live-verified for CoT 2. Wait for in-game data or run your own controlled test.
- Event multipliers: check Nexon's official MSCW announcements. These change weekly and are never in datamine.
Bottom line for returners
Your traditional MapleStory grinding-spot instincts are mostly still valid. Mob EXP for iconic mobs (Wild Boar, Cold Eye, Wraith, Drake, Death Teddy) matches the wiki you remember. Where things get uncertain is:
- Party bonus percentages - directionally correct, exact values TBD.
- Quest reward EXP - CoT 2 datamine is authoritative; treat old wiki quest-EXP numbers as vibes.
- Level curve - unclear. If leveling feels faster/slower than in traditional MapleStory memory, it's probably the curve rather than mob EXP.
- Post-launch event multipliers - completely unknown until Nexon announces the event schedule.
