The party EXP formula (traditional MapleStory canon, unverified for CoT 2)
MapleStory traditional MapleStory party EXP has a bonus multiplier designed to reward grouping. The canonical traditional MapleStory formula for how much EXP each partymate gets from a mob kill:
partyExp(member) = mobBaseExp * (0.6 / partySize + 0.4 * (memberLevel / totalPartyLevel))
Two moving parts:
- Flat share (60%): divided equally among all members. This part gets smaller as your party grows.
- Level-weighted share (40%): proportional to YOUR level relative to the party's total level. If you're the highest-level member, you get more of this chunk.
The critical detail: the total EXP awarded to the party as a whole exceeds the mob's base EXP. For a 2-member party of equal levels, the total is 1.4x the mob's EXP. For a 3-member party of equal levels, it's 1.6x. For 4-6 members, it plateaus around 1.7-1.8x. That extra EXP is the party bonus, and it's why partying works.
Solo vs. party: the numbers
Concrete example: two identical Lv 30 Warriors farming Zombie Mushrooms (base EXP: ~90 per kill traditionally). Two scenarios:
- Both soloing: each kills 300 mobs/hour, gets 90 EXP/kill = 27,000 EXP/hour each. Total EXP earned by the two of them: 54,000/hour.
- Partied together, sharing the same map: They share kills, so raw kill count per player drops. But EACH kill now awards them 0.6/2 + 0.4*(30/60) = 0.5 of base EXP each - which sounds bad until you realize they're combining their attack rate against the mob population. Realistic outcome: each gets ~35,000 EXP/hour, total 70,000/hour - a 30% party bonus for zero extra effort.
The party bonus scales further at 3 members if they can all meaningfully contribute, up to about 1.7x total. Past 4 members the flat-share fraction drops enough that solo comes back into the picture unless the party is doing something impossible to solo (bosses, PQs).
The classic PQ progression (why PQs win)
Party quests were designed as intentional EXP dumps for their level bracket. Every classic PQ awards a large chunk of level-scaled EXP on completion, PLUS the party bonus on the mobs inside. During each PQ's optimal window, no solo grinding spot outperforms it.
| PQ | Level Range | Party Size | Optimal Window | Site Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kerning PQ (KPQ) | 21-30 | 3-6 | 21-28 | Walkthrough |
| Ludibrium PQ (LPQ) | 35-50 | 3-6 | 35-45 | planned |
| Amoria PQ (APQ) | 30-70 | 6 (couples) | 30-55 | planned |
| Ludi Maze PQ (LMPQ) | 51-70 | 3-6 | 51-65 | planned |
| Orbis PQ (OPQ) | 51-70 | 3-6 | 55-70 | planned |
| Herb Town PQ (HTPQ) | 50-70 | 3-6 | 50-65 | planned |
| Guild PQ | 35-200 | 6 (guild) | on demand | planned |
Note that MSCW hasn't confirmed which of these PQs will ship in what launch phase - Kerning PQ is confirmed for launch, everything else is TBD. Check the party quests hub for the ship-status roll-up.
KPQ (21-30) is the free lunch
If you're between Lv 21 and 28 and not in KPQ, you're throwing levels away. A single KPQ clear is 15-30 minutes and awards 15,000-25,000 EXP plus scroll drops. Chain 4 clears back-to-back and you'll clear a level per hour with almost no meso spend. The KPQ walkthrough has full party comp advice and stage-by-stage tactics.
Grinding spots by level bracket (no PQ)
When the PQ scene is dead (early morning, late night, or a PQ you're outside the level range for), traditional grinding takes over. Rough map guide by level bracket:
| Level | Best solo spots | Best party spots |
|---|---|---|
| 1-10 | Maple Island tutorial (mandatory) | N/A - Maple Island is solo |
| 10-15 | Snails / Slimes / Pigs around Henesys | Ribbon Pig groups near Pig Beach |
| 15-20 | Green Mushrooms / Blue Snails | Mushroom Park (Lv 15-22 mixed) |
| 20-30 | Golems / Horny Mushrooms | KPQ nonstop, or Kerning subway line |
| 30-40 | Ligators / Wild Boars | Wild Kargos, Coolie Zombies with a duo |
| 40-50 | Coolie Zombie / Wraith line | Ghost Ship + LPQ opens |
| 50-60 | Bains / Straw Target Dummies | Ludi Maze PQ / Orbis PQ opens |
| 60-70 | Death Teddies / Master Death Teddies | LMPQ / OPQ farm grinds |
| 70+ | Truckers / Bains (still) / Skele line | Zakum runs, guild PQs, boss trains |

Common leveling mistakes to skip
Mistake 1: Soloing when you could party
The 30% party bonus is free. Every hour you solo when a KPQ or LPQ party is available is 30% of a level thrown away. If you're an introvert who hates chat, join a party silently, buff the party leader, and let the run happen. Nobody demands conversation.
Mistake 2: Kill-stealing in shared maps
Two players on the same map without partying is worse than partying up in every metric - both take longer to level, both get less EXP per kill (partial-hit rules), and the social cost of KS'ing someone repeatedly is real. Rule of thumb: if you enter a map and see another player, either offer party or channel-swap within 30 seconds. Don't quietly grind side-by-side.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the rest-and-buff rotation
MapleStory's HP/MP regen doubles when your character is sitting. Between mob spawns, sit down. Between skill uses that push you low, sit down. Your potion budget drops by 30-50% if you commit to a 5-second sit any time HP or MP is below 70%. This one habit alone is the difference between "always broke" and "banking mesos while leveling".
Mistake 4: Overleveling for the PQ
Every classic PQ has a hard level cap. KPQ caps at 30, LPQ at 50, LMPQ at 70. If you're at the cap-minus-one and grinding, you're losing access to the PQ EXP fountain by hitting the cap. The fix: once you're within 2 levels of a PQ cap, pause grinding, do 3-5 PQ runs first, THEN resume the grind. You'll end each session higher-level per hour spent.
Mistake 5: Fighting overleveled mobs
Killing mobs more than 20 levels above you gives capped EXP (you get the full amount) but MSCW's hit-chance formula punishes you hard - your accuracy against a 30-level-above mob is near zero. You'll miss 70% of hits, waste MP on skills that don't connect, and die frequently. Fight mobs within 5-10 levels of your own; the EXP per minute is dramatically higher than trying to overkill above you.
The closing math
Rough back-of-envelope: a player who parties, PQs when available, and rests between mobs will level 2x faster and spend 40% less on potions than a soloer who ignores those three habits, at the same time investment. That's not a small difference - that's the difference between hitting Lv 50 in a week of casual play vs. three weeks. Every hour partying with the right party is worth roughly two hours soloing.
