Gearing Up to Level 30

NPC shops sell fine gear, but the good stuff drops. This is the guide to what's worth chasing versus what to just buy - by class, by slot, and by which training spots double as gear farms while you push toward 2nd job advancement.

The gearing philosophy

Between Lv 1 and Lv 30, most players over-spend on gear. They buy every new weapon tier at the shop, replace armor every 10 levels, and hit the 2nd job job change with 40k meso in the bank. That's the wrong loop.

The right loop: buy a cheap weapon at each tier from the shop, but farm your shield, gloves, shoes, and accessories from mobs. Shop-only slots (chest, pants, hat) get one shop piece at Lv 10 and one at Lv 20, then you save the rest for potions and the 2nd-job weapon (which is the single biggest meso sink pre-40, at ~700k-2M depending on class).

The list below is every equipment drop with a level requirement of 30 or below that our datamine has confirmed. We prioritize drops with a MeowDB score of 3+ (means multiple players have seen and voted them as consistent). Anything score 1-2 gets listed as "rare/possible" - don't camp for it.

Universal picks (any class)

Three drops are worth going out of your way for regardless of what class you rolled. They cover slots where shop options are either non-existent or strictly worse:

Pan Lid (shield, Lv 10)

Drops from Green Mushroom (Lv 14). MeowDB score 14 - the single most-confirmed drop in the pre-30 table.

Any-class shield with meaningful defense at a level where most players don't own one. The Lv 10 requirement means it slots in immediately after your first job advancement. Farm at West Rocky Mountain III or Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North IV - both are also excellent Lv 15-22 EXP maps.

Work Gloves (Lv 10, any)

Drops from Stirge (Lv 20). Score 4.

Also the guaranteed quest reward from Andre's Request at Lv 10 - so most players don't need to farm this. Listed here for completeness: if you skipped the Nella quest chain, Stirge in the Dark Cave / Transfer Area drop these at score 4 (very reliable). +6 Defense + 1 Critical Rate and 5 upgrade slots make this the base for every scrolled glove pipeline later.

Weighted Earrings (Lv 20, any)

Drops from Zombie Mushroom (Lv 24, score 4) and Wild Boar (Lv 25, score 2).

Earring slot is usually empty until Lv 30+, but Weighted Earrings pop at Lv 20 with real stats. Ant Tunnel III farms Zombie Mushrooms for both this AND the White Chaos Robe (Lv 35 mage overall - keep it for the future). Best accessory upgrade of the pre-30 arc.

Training spots that double as gear farms

Some maps are worth camping specifically because the mob you're grinding drops gear you actually want. Sorted by the level bracket they cover:

Level bracket Mob & spot What drops here
Lv 10-15 Orange Mushroom (Lv 8)
Henesys Hunting Ground / Dangerous Forest
Long Sword (warrior, Lv 10, sc4), Double Axe (Lv 10, sc4), Spear (Lv 10, sc4), White Gomushin shoes (Lv 11)
Lv 15-22 Green Mushroom (Lv 14)
West Rocky Mountain III, Tree Dungeon IV
Pan Lid shield (sc14), Emerald Staff (mage, sc3), Green Woodsman Boots (bowman, sc4)
Lv 15-20 Bubbling (Lv 15)
Line 1 Area 1 (Kerning subway)
Battle Axe (warrior Lv 15, sc3), Fish Spear (Lv 20, sc9), Triple-Tipped Zamadar (thief Lv 17, sc6)
Lv 22-28 Horny Mushroom (Lv 22)
Ant Tunnel IV, Ant Tunnel III
Steel Fingerless Gloves (warrior Lv 15, sc5), Iron Dagger (thief/warrior Lv 25, sc2), Mithril Pole Arm (warrior Lv 30, sc2)
Lv 24-30 Zombie Mushroom (Lv 24)
Ant Tunnel III, Ant Tunnel II
Weighted Earrings (Lv 20, sc4), and White Chaos Robe (mage Lv 35, sc8 - stash for later)
Lv 25-30 Wild Boar (Lv 25)
West Rocky Mountain IV, Perion Dungeon
Eagle Crow crossbow (bowman Lv 30, sc4), Ryden bow (Lv 30, sc2), Weighted Earrings
Lv 28-32 Fire Boar (Lv 32)
The Burnt Land III/IV/V
Fireman's Axe (warrior Lv 30, sc4) - a top-tier pre-job-change axe. Slight over-level to grind solo; go in a party for EXP anyway.

Warrior gear picks

Warriors have the deepest weapon-drop pool because they can wield swords, axes, blunt weapons, spears, and polearms. The winning play here is: buy shop swords for the Lv 1-15 arc (too many drops beat them to bother farming), then chase the named weapons below for the Lv 15-30 arc.

Skip: Wooden Sword (Lv 10, sc4) - lands too early, gets replaced within a level. Same with Metal Axe (Lv 10, warrior-tagged) - the Long Sword from Orange Mushroom is a better use of your time.

Magician gear picks

Magicians live and die by INT-scaling gear, and INT-tagged staff drops are surprisingly common in the pre-30 arc. Buy the Lv 8 wand from Grendel the Really Old, then farm the following:

Bowman gear picks

Bowmen have the smallest drop pool but the most concentrated one: Wild Boar carries both viable 2nd-job weapons, which means one training spot pre-30 answers your Lv 30 weapon question regardless of whether you go Hunter or Crossbowman.

Thief gear picks

Thieves get punished hardest by weapon shop prices (claws and daggers scale hard with level requirements), so the drop route saves the most meso here. If you're going Assassin (claw) the drop table is thin - buy shop claws through Lv 30. If you're going Bandit (dagger), the drops below are excellent (weapon req level scaling is steep for both weapons):

Hats (the slot I told you to skip)

Full transparency: my first draft of this guide told you to buy the Lv 10 shop hat and forget about the slot. Then I re-ran the datamine audit and it laughed at me - there are ten pre-Lv30 hat drops with score >=3 that any class would actually equip, and most of them come from mobs already in your farm table. Zero new maps required. Here's the corrected picture.

The one hat every class should chase

Red Starry Bandana (Lv 25, all-job, score 8) - drops from Stirge in Sleepywood. +2 STR, 24 PDD, 5 MaxHP. There is no shop hat in the Lv 20-30 range that comes within 10 PDD of this. Stirge is already your Work Gloves + Blue Basic Boots farm - three drops from one map.

Magician-only hats

Mages get the deepest hat pool - four class-locked options across the Lv 10-30 window:

Warrior / Bowman / Thief hats

Universal fallback (any class)

Punch line update: the "three map plan" (Green Mushroom, Ant Tunnel, Wild Boar) now covers your hat slot too. Add Stirge to the rotation between Lv 20-25 for the Red Starry Bandana and you've got a complete Lv 10-30 kit from four maps.

What NOT to chase

The mob drop table has a lot of noise. Skip these:

The punch line

Pick one map, farm it hard. Green Mushrooms at West Rocky Mountain III is the single best training spot in the Lv 15-22 window: Pan Lid for shield, Emerald Staff or Green Woodsman Boots depending on class, and clean EXP that gets you to Kerning PQ. Then move to Ant Tunnel III/IV for the Lv 22-28 window (Horny Mushroom + Zombie Mushroom on adjacent maps), grab your Weighted Earrings and Steel Fingerless Gloves, and finish the Lv 28-30 grind at Wild Boar for Eagle Crow or Fireman's Axe.

Three maps. Six meaningful drops. About 15 hours of gameplay. You'll hit Lv 30 with a full accessory kit, a good weapon, and enough banked meso to buy your 2nd-job weapon at the job change - which is the outcome most players don't achieve because they're broke from over-buying shop gear.

Data provenance: mob drop tables from MeowDB (meowdb.com/msclassic), item stats + level requirements from the CoT 2 client datamine. MeowDB scores are community upvotes minus downvotes (public vote count per drop). This guide will get re-verified with in-game drop testing. If you spot a drop that's mis-listed, please open an issue.

Up next: hit Lv 30, then read the Warrior / Magician / Bowman / Thief 2nd-job branch decision guide for your class.
